"Proud Boys" trial begins with prosecutor detailing East Side beatdown of Antifa, defense insisting their clients were the victims - 2019-08-01
Two members of the far-right "Proud Boys" viciously assaulted black-clad Antifa protesters last year outside the Metropolitan Republican Club — punching, kicking and body-slamming them in a violent clash of political cultures, a Manhattan prosecutor charged Thursday.
"The Proud Boys started this brawl and they finished it," said Assistant District Attorney Joshua Steinglass in opening arguments at Manhattan Criminal Court. "They simply walked away whooping and hollering and congratulating themselves on their accomplishment."
Defendants Maxwell Hare and John Kinsman, in suits with their high-and-tight haircuts slicked back, sat at the defense table as their lawyers argued the two men were the targets rather than the aggressors in the fight with the left-wing group.
