Acting DHS Secretary says elected leaders in Portland 'played partisan politics with public safety' - 2020-09-09
The acting secretary of the Department of Homeland Security on Wednesday pledged the agency will continue to resist civil unrest in America's cities, protect federal buildings and property and hold accountable those like the "violent opportunists" in Portland who he said repeatedly targeted the federal courthouse in the city's downtown.
"We will never abdicate this moral and legal duty," Chad F. Wolf said in a videotaped 2020 State of the Homeland address.
He said he was proud of the work federal officers did in Portland, which has generated a half a dozen lawsuits alleging excessive and inappropriate use of force, investigations by the inspector general's office and a court-ordered preliminary injunction that restricted federal threats or assaults against the press and legal observers. The injunction was put on hold by a federal appeals court as Wolf's agency challenges it.
