The Church of Scientology already owns 12 parcels worth more than $21-million in Clearwater. One of those buildings, the Sandcastle Motel, is now undergoing renovations. In September, the church hopes to start construction on the religious services building in conjunction with the renovation, said Bill Daugherty, a Scientology spokesman.

The 25,000-square-foot religious services building will be built on the site of the motel's existing reception building and will house a reception area, classrooms and counseling rooms. Floor space would be increased by 21,500 square feet, according to a site plan filed with the city.
