After three patient deaths in nine months at its flagship drug rehab clinic in Oklahoma that took place in 2011 and 2012, Scientology shifted gears with its "Narconon" system.

A sign of that shift in strategy was its $5 million purchase in 2014 for Larry Hagman's Ojai, California estate which had gone on the market after the Dallas actor's 2012 death.

In 2001, Scientology paid $1.5 million for its Oklahoma property with plans for up to 300 beds. But now that it was dialing down, it made sense to Scientology leader David Miscavige to pay $5 million for Hagman's beautiful estate with plans for a rehab with only six beds. It was so small, it would fly under any kind of regulation by the state.
