But the most explosive charge came Monday, when Woodruff sent out a flier that attempted to link Huenink to the Church of Scientology.

The church, which has attracted controversy in the U.S. and other countries, has a headquarters in Clearwater. In the past, members have tried to infiltrate local political offices. Church officials said they had no interest in the House District 58 race and didn't know why Woodruff charged that Huenink had solicited church support.

Most of the talk Tuesday among Republicans watching election returns focused on the Scientology charge and what impact it might have on the vote.
