Despite strong feelings from opponents and supporters, a crowd of nearly 300 remained orderly during a Tuesday public hearing on Narconon's application for state certification as a drug and alcohol treatment center.

Narconon's operation of the 75-bed drug and alcohol facility on Indian land at Chilocco has received strong opposition, primarily because of its ties to the Church of Scientology.

A recommendation on whether Narconon will be issued state certification is expected prior to the Oct. 18 meeting of the state Board of Mental Health, spokesman Rosemary Brown said.
