A divided Riverside County Board of Supervisors is expected today to approve an ordinance to restrict residential picketing.

Supervisor Jeff Stone's proposed measure would confine "targeted picketing" to no closer than 300 feet of a person's residence.

The "time, place and manner" restriction, which would apply to residents living in unincorporated communities, is necessary in light of recent protests at a religious compound, according to Stone.

His chief of staff, Verne Lauritzen, identified members of the Church of Scientology in San Jacinto as inspiration for the ordinance.
