Scientologists offer to drop lawsuit against Clearwater - 1987-10-02
The City Commission passed the charitable solicitations ordinance in 1983. It was one of four recommended by Boston lawyer Michael Flynn after five days of commission hearings in 1982 in which former Scientologists spoke of moneymaking schemes, smear campaigns and alleged criminal activities within the organization.
The ordinance requires registration and extensive financial disclosure by all non-profit organizations and religious groups that raise more than $10,000 per year. It is aimed at regulating Scientologists' activities in Clearwater.
