The protesters wore masks and insisted on anonymity, but were united in their target - alleged abuses by the Church of Scientology.

About young 50 men and women protested near the church's storefront offices on Papineau St. near Mount Royal Ave. yesterday afternoon and handed out pamphlets.

They came together through various Internet websites and expressed concern about the church's tactics and its growth in Montreal.

The reason for anonymity is fear of being sued for saying anything deemed defamatory, protesters indicated.
