The state of Scientology headquarters at 696 Yonge St. in Toronto has been deteriorating for decades. The neglect has contributed to the overall blight of that particular stretch of Canada's most famous street.

A rendering of its proposed overhaul suggests that it hopes to be a better, or at least more attractive, neighbour.

Still, a slicker structure doesn't necessarily mean that Scientology will eradicate efforts to reveal what exactly goes on inside.

The criticism has soared in the past five years, at least since online activist group Anonymous targeted the organization for its secrecy, which reached a boil when it tried to get a recruitment video starring Tom Cruise removed from the web.
