The controversial church is using spruikers at Southbank to recruit members through "stress tests", and I have taken up their invitation for a tour.

But within minutes of walking into the celebrity-laden church's swish Ascot Vale headquarters, it's apparent this is no tour. It's a sales pitch.

A bookshop filled with the teachings of founder L. Ron Hubbard greets visitors before they reach reception, and glossy signs espouse the religion's successes.
