The Church of Scientology of Toronto has received "considerable" financial assistance from its U.S.-based "mother church" and should be able to pay a $1 million fine despite a plea of poverty, a crown attorney says.

James Stewart is seeking a fine of at least $1 million for the church. He suggested jail terms of six months for church "case officer" Jacqueline Matz and of 30 to 90 days for Scientology "plants" Janice Wheeler and Donald Whitmore.

Stewart revealed yesterday that one of the mortgages, worth almost $3 million (U.S.), is owed to the U.S.-based Scientology International Reserves Trust.
