The Little Known CEO Spending Millions To Elect Far-Right Republicans - 2018-02-13
You may not have heard of Richard Uihlein, but he's one of the most influential names in today's election. The ultra-conservative Wisconsin businessman, alongside his wife, Elizabeth, has poured at least $5 million into the race, making the couple the fifth largest spenders in the most expensive midterm elections on record.
Most of that money – $4.2 million – has gone to far-Right super PACs, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, a nonpartisan group that tracks election spending.
The biggest beneficiary of the couple's largesse has been Liberty Principles PAC, a conservative Illinois group that funds TV ads and mail campaigns backing "liberty oriented" Republicans. The Uihleins gave the group nearly $1.8 million, supplying virtually its entire budget. They also donated nearly half a million dollars to the Senate Conservatives Fund and its affiliated super PAC, founded by Tea Party hero Jim DeMint, a former senator from South Carolina. They gave another $670,000 to Americas PAC, which runs ads supporting free-market candidates in urban markets.
