After a week that saw numerous revelations detailing Trump's failure to rein in COVID-19, a senior aide in his administration went on social media to deliver a tirade against scientists and Democrats. According to the New York Times, on Sunday, Michael Caputo told his Facebook following during a Facebook Live event that scientists, "deep in the bowels of the CDC have given up science and become political animals."

"There are scientists who work for this government who do not want America to get well, not until after Joe Biden is president," he continued. "To allow people to die so that you can replace the president is a grievous venial sin, venial sin. And these people are all going to hell."

Though he has no background in health or science, Caputo was tapped to become assistant secretary of public affairs at the Department of Health and Human Services in April, two months after Trump told the American public that COVID-19 would "disappear." He essentially leads an 80,000-person department that is the heart of the country's public health unit, which includes the Food and Drug Administration, the CDC, and the National Institutes of Health. Since his appointment, Caputo has crafted a narrative that supports Trump's claims of the virus being under control, even as CDC Director Robert Redfield has said it would be "prudent to assume this pathogen will be with us for some time to come."
