Rabbi Sapperstein was originally appointed to the White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships when Barack Obama assumed office. He was repeatedly advocated for by CSI lobbyist Greg Mitchell for nomination as USCIRF Ambassador-at-Large prior to his predecessor's term (during a vacancy in 2010), and up until his later appointment by President Obama in 2014.
