Rabbi Sapperstein was originally appointed to the White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships when Barack Obama assumed office. He was repeatedly advocated for by CSI lobbyist Greg Mitchell for nomination as US Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom prior to his predecessor's term (during a vacancy in 2010), and up until his later appointment by President Obama in 2014.
