Ordinance on charities is retained November 6, 1987,
City commissioners refused Thursday to repeal the city's controversial charitable solicitations ordinance in order to end a legal battle with the Church of Scientology.
But they will invite the Scientologists and several other religious groups to submit amendments that might make the ordinance more palatable to them.
The Church of Scientology, which has maintained an international headquarters in Clearwater since 1975, gave the City Commission a Thursday deadline to agree to repeal the ordinance. In exchange, the organization would drop its lawsuit and a demand for about $100,000 in attorneys' fees.
