Organizers say the vigil is a memorial to Lisa McPherson, the 36-year-old Scientologist who died in 1995 after a 17-day stay at the Fort Harrison Hotel. Her death from a blood clot is being investigated by state and local authorities. McPherson's estate has filed a lawsuit seeking damages from the church.

Scientology spokesman Brian Anderson criticized the vigil, saying the protesters never knew McPherson and would have derided her if she were still alive and a practicing Scientologist.
