The Church of Scientology, stung by a Time magazine cover story describing it as a "cult of greed," is fighting back with an advertising campaign featuring images of Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini.

The Rev. Heber C. Jentzsch, president of the church, called the magazine story "a hatchet job." He said the ad campaign, which began this week with a series of full-page ads in USA Today, focused on Time's coverage of Hitler and Mussolini because Time executives "were wrong then and they're wrong now... . These guys are coming at us with a bully attack and now they're unhappy about being exposed."

Time officials defend the story as accurate and say they are not surprised by the counterattack. "The church has a long history of vigorously attacking its enemies, and obviously Time is now in that category," said Richard Behar, the story's author.
