Pinellas County Judge Stephen Rushing made a flagrant mistake when he directed 18 defendants to a counseling program affiliated with the Church of Scientology. Judges, who have the power to control defendants' lives, have a special obligation to protect the constitutional separation between church and state. Rushing's intentions may have been innocent, but his actions violated that obligation.
